Certifications: do we need them?
Why certifications are important
They ensure the level of social and environmental performance claimed by a brand, and they are controlled by an external organization, for example, GOTS.
The company, the process, and the product must comply with requirements in a designated standard.
Certifications provide legal and brand protection, but especially credibility.
They are also responsible for leading social and environmental improvements towards better and more meaningful changes.
To be more specific, a company cannot brand its product "organic" or "recycled" without having it certified.
How long are certifications valid for?
Certifications usually have a 12-month validation period. That means that each textile mill needs to ensure its products are checked, certified, and updated constantly.
