GOTS: Global Organic Textile Standard
What Does it exactly meaning?
GOTS can refer to the textile itself or the whole textile product. This standard ensures that the whole production process protects both the environment and the people who make it. The certification covers the raw crop through to the textile mills. All the steps are traceable.
Key points to remember whenever you see the GOTS label:
- A textile product must have a min 70% certified organic fibres in order to be labelled 'made with organic materials'
- A textile product must have a min 95% of certified organic fibres in order to be labelled 'organic'
- The raw material is grown without any pesticides, herbicides or insecticides
- Use of low impact and reusable chemicals such as the dyes
- Control on released wastewater and air quality
- Workers must not be exposed to any harm throughout the production process, meaning safe working conditions
- No child or forced labour
Workers free from discrimination and freedom of association
It all sounds very obvious but it is really not!
Is there a difference between GOTS and OEKO-TEX Standard 100?
Yes, there is a huge difference! Because the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 just certifies from the use of harmful and banned chemical throughout the manufacturing process.
Which fibres does the GOTS label cover?
The GOTS certification cover certified organic fibres (min 70%) but it can also include:
30% of
- natural fibres, both vegetal and animal
- sustainable regenerated fibres (lyocell and protein base fibres)
- sustainable recycled fibres (certified recycled polyester, polyamide, polypropylene and polyurethane)
Fibres not permitted (most common):
- conventional cotton
- virgin polyester
- conventional angora
- acrylic
- silver
